Capturing a clear and stunning photography of the moon can be quite challenging, as smartphone images often turn out blurry or poorly exposed. However, with Monday's upcoming supermoon, individuals may wonder how they can increase their chances of capturing a decent shot.
A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to the Earth in its orbit, resulting in increased brightness and a larger appearance in the sky. The optimal time to photograph a supermoon is just after sunset when the moon is rising. During this time, the sky's color and the presence of clouds can aid in achieving the correct exposure, as the contrast between the sky and the moon's color is less extreme.
If you own a newer smartphone, you may have access to settings that allow you to adjust the focal length, exposure, ISO (camera sensitivity), and shutter speed. Mark Lord, the founder and owner of Mark Lord Photography, advises against using flash and recommends activating HDR (high dynamic range) if available on your phone. HDR enhances the contrast between the darkest and lightest parts of an image, resulting in more striking photographs. Flash, on the other hand, tends to ruin night sky captures.
It's important to consider the focus as well. While it may be tempting to zoom in and capture as much of the moon as possible, Lord explains that most smartphones, even newer models, lack the zoom capacity necessary for such distant objects. Attempting to zoom in may compromise the image's resolution and quality. Instead, Lord suggests creating a more captivating shot by adopting a landscape-style approach. By incorporating foreground objects and landmarks, such as tree branches, you can add depth and variety to the image, resulting in a spooky and atmospheric composition.
